5 Tips to Find Back-to-School Clothes For Less

Going back-to-school shopping is an annual ritual for most families. This year, 67% of families started back-to-school shopping as early as July, according to the National Retail Federation, and plan to spend about $860 on necessary supplies, including clothes. But 47% are waiting to shop so they can find the best deals – those new clothes can get expensive quickly!

If that’s you, there are many ways to scoop up affordable back-to-school clothes for kids…and get creative with your shopping strategy to save. Here are five ways to do back-to-school clothes shopping on a budget.

1. Be Selective About What To Buy

If your kids aren’t going through a growth spurt, it’s possible that they can just wear the basics from last year, like jackets, jeans and leggings. Have your kids check their closets and drawers for things that still fit. The best way to sort through it: Make piles of items that still fit, and write down items or colorways that are missing. Then if your budget permits, splurge on a few stylish pieces that are on-trend.

2. Look For Back-To-School Sales Online

55% of parents do their back-to-school shopping online, which can save you time, energy and money. However, it’s not always cheaper than going to a physical store. To find the best deals, look for back-to-school advertisements on your favorite store’s website: Check out this roundup, if you’re unsure where to start. If you’re shopping on Amazon, their Back-to-School shop is grouped into categories by essentials, such as fashion, clothing ranked 4 stars and above and uniforms under $20.

3. Visit Budget-Friendly Stores

From The Children’s Place, TJ Maxx and Kohls to Old Navy and Walmart, there’s no shortage of options for scoring a new wardrobe at one of these wallet-friendly stores, especially at the end of summer and during back-to-school sales. You can find great deals on shoes, athletic apparel and brand-name items for up to 60%.

4. Shop Vintage And Recycled Clothing

One of the best ways to stock up on unique, trendy items is to take your kids to vintage clothing stores, consignment shops or goodwill. Scouring the racks for items you wouldn’t see in regular stores can add to the excitement of finding something unique and stylish. Plus, letting your kids express their individuality—and even use their hard-earned cash to pay for their newfound treasures—are great ways to teach kids good money habits early.

5. Encourage Hand-Me-Downs Amongst Siblings

Though it could prove tricky amongst siblings with different styles, passing down clothing between your kids is a great way to make purchases last as your children grow. Personalizing items with patches, dye, or other embellishments can make old items seem new. And if your neighbors have kids in the same size or age range, setting up a clothing swap is an easy way to exchange cute items before the school year starts.
