8 Mother’s Day Activities For The Whole Family

Mother’s Day is the day we celebrate everything that moms do for us. From planner-in-chief to expert problem solver and a therapeutic ear, moms spend so much of their day supporting their family.

But while they are on-call 364 days a year, Mother’s Day should be the day where it is all about celebrating her. But a recent study found that one-third of moms have to book their own Mother’s Day meal.  

Take the load off of mom this year! Send her flowers and shower her with thanks. Do something just for her, whether that is pampering her, giving her an extra set of helping hands around the house, or taking her out to her favorite place.

Here are eight Mother’s Day activities to celebrate mom.  

1. Organize a Family Talent Show

The holidays often place so much emphasis on material gifts, which can force you to buy mom something she doesn’t want or need. Instead of adding to the clutter in your home (and creating more to clean up later!), why not stage a talent show for mom? Writing poems or songs—or creating a cute dance or skit in her honor—is a great way to shower her with praise and highlight your children’s unique talents.

2. Clean the House for Mom

Many households rely upon mom to do the organizing and deep cleaning at home. But even if you outsource this task to a cleaning service, picking up around the house can be a huge help. Take some time to get the house tidy. Get in the habit of cleaning up after yourself, which would be a huge help to moms. 

3. Garden as a Family

Is it a coincidence that the start of gardening season and Mother’s Day fall at the same time? We think not! Spending the afternoon outdoors and tending to your yard or family’s garden is a great way to embrace nature as a family, and honor Mother Earth as well. You can even plant flowers or a special plant in honor of mom and encourage kids to take care of it year-round.

4. Prepare Mom Breakfast in Bet

Letting mom sleep in on a Sunday while you take on the task of meal prep is a universally popular Mother’s Day gift for a reason: It feels indulgent and special. Plus, you can avoid the restaurant crowds that flock to your favorite brunch spots. Add a bouquet of flowers and handmade card to mom’s breakfast-in-bed tray to make it feel like room service.

5. Take a Walk Together

For an easy way to combine exercise with quality bonding time, take an afternoon walk with mom. Even if your mom considers walking her “me time”, a neighborhood stroll or hike on the nearest wooded path is a great chance to share memories and tell her how much you value all she does. It might even become a monthly or annual tradition.

6. Give Her Peace and Quiet

The overwhelming majority of moms say that they would love more sleep or peace and quiet for Mother’s Day. If yours is one of them, schedule a family activity separately and allow mom to enjoy a day of pampering. Whether that’s a quiet house, spa day or night at a local hotel, Mom will feel rejuvenated and listened to, and you’ll be reminded how much her absence is felt (even for a day!).

7. Plan a BBQ or Picnic

Have a mom who isn’t the brunch or breakfast type? Organizing a family picnic lunch for outdoor eating at a local park—or hosting a backyard BBQ and inviting neighbors and friends—is an easy way to take the stress of meal planning out of mom’s day. 

8. Make a Themed Playlist 

Though it requires some collaboration and planning, creating a Spotify playlist of mom-themed songs (or songs that remind you of your family’s matriarch) is a sweet way your family can remind mom how much she matters. Whether it’s on a run or during your morning commute, listening to her special themed playlist will remind her how much she is valued year round.
