Back-to-School Made Easier: 10 Tips to Help Kids Start the School Year Strong

The countdown to the first day of school has begun! While kids may be squeezing every last drop out of summer vacation, parents are often juggling school supply lists, new schedules and the inevitable question: “Where did the summer go?”

The good news? A little preparation now can make the transition from lazy summer mornings to school-day routines much smoother for everyone. Here are 10 simple ways to help your child head back to school feeling confident, prepared and excited.

1. Ease Back Into a School Sleep Schedule

Summer bedtimes have a way of creeping later and later. About one to two weeks before school starts, gradually move bedtime and wake-up time earlier by 15 to 30 minutes each day. A well-rested child is more likely to stay focused, regulate emotions, and have the energy to learn.

2. Practice the Morning Routine

Mornings can feel rushed, especially during the first week of school. Do a few practice runs before school starts. Have your child wake up, get dressed, eat breakfast, brush their teeth and pack their backpack on a school-day schedule. It helps everyone work out the kinks before the real thing.

3. Make School Shopping a Team Activity

Whether you’re buying notebooks, pencils or a new backpack, let your child help make a few choices. Giving kids some ownership over their supplies can help build excitement and make them feel more prepared for the year ahead.

4. Get Organized Early

Label school supplies, fill out any required paperwork, and create a family calendar with important dates. Designate one spot at home for backpacks, lunch boxes, homework and shoes. Future-you will be grateful on busy weekday mornings.

5. Refresh Learning Skills

No need to recreate the classroom at home. Reading together, practicing math facts, writing in a journal or playing educational games for 15–20 minutes a day can help ease the transition back into learning.

6. Talk About Feelings

Starting a new school year can bring excitement, nervousness or a little of both. Ask open-ended questions like:

  • What are you looking forward to?
  • Is there anything you’re worried about?
  • What do you hope this year will be like?

Simply listening can help ease anxiety and build confidence.

7. Reconnect With Friends

If possible, arrange a playdate, visit the neighborhood park or attend school orientation events before classes begin. Seeing familiar faces on the first day can make a big difference, especially for younger children or those changing schools.

8. Build Healthy Habits

A healthy breakfast, nutritious snacks, regular physical activity and staying hydrated all help children stay energized and focused throughout the school day. Packing lunches together can also encourage healthy choices and reduce morning stress.

9. Limit Screen Time Before Bed

As school approaches, help children swap evening screen time for reading, drawing, puzzles or other calming activities. Reducing screen use before bedtime can make it easier to fall asleep and wake up refreshed.

10. Celebrate the New Beginning

The first day of school marks a fresh start. Take a first-day photo, write a note of encouragement in your child’s lunchbox or enjoy a special breakfast together. Small traditions create lasting memories and help build excitement for the year ahead.

Progress Over Perfection

The first few weeks of school rarely go exactly as planned—and that’s okay. Someone will probably forget a folder, miss the bus or discover that the gym uniform is still sitting in a dresser. Every family experiences a few bumps while settling into a new routine.

Give yourself and your child a little grace. Before long, the new schedule will become second nature, and you’ll all be wondering how summer flew by so quickly.

Here’s to a school year filled with learning, growth, new friendships and plenty of memorable moments. Good luck, parents—you’ve got this!
