Spring Allergens: Tips to Avoid Allergies

Itchy eyes? Runny nose? Constant sneezing or coughing? It could be allergies.

Spring is here, and with it comes pollen, blooming trees, and the sniffles that follow. While you can’t control what’s outside, you can control what happens inside your home, and that makes a real difference for kids dealing with allergies — because the best defense is a good offense.

Manage Allergens in Your Kids’ Bedrooms

Once inside your home, pollen can settle on surfaces, bedding, and furniture where kids spend their time. Kids spend a third of their time sleeping, which means their beds are allergen hotspots. Wash sheets in hot water every week during allergy season to kill dust mites and remove pollen. Every 6-8 weeks take a vacuum and steam cleaner to your mattress. If your kids have stuffed animals they sleep with, wash those regularly too. Lysol® Laundry Sanitizer is a great way to gently disinfect sentimental toys.

Address Soft Surfaces

Curtains, pillows, and rugs trap allergens like magnets. Wash curtains regularly, and if you have wall-to-wall carpeting, consider shampooing at least once a year, especially in kids’ rooms and main living areas. You’d be surprised at the amount of dust mites and dander you’ll find hiding. Vacuum upholstered surfaces like couches and chairs weekly to prevent pollen and dust from accumulating.

Pet Care Matters

If you have pets, they’re likely bringing pollen inside on their fur. Brush and shampoo your pets regularly, especially during spring. After outdoor time, wipe down your pet’s paws and belly before they jump on furniture or curl up with the family.

Don’t Forget High-Touch Areas

Door handles, light switches, and remote controls collect dust mites and debris throughout the day. Wipe these down with Lysol® Disinfecting Wipes daily during allergy season to reduce the germs your kids are touching. Don’t forget often-missed spots like the tops of picture frames, ceiling fans, and light fixtures where dust and pollen collect. A quick pass with Lysol® Disinfectant Spray on surfaces around your kids’ rooms removes allergen buildup that can trigger symptoms.

Leave Pollen at the Door

Pollen can enter your home through your family’s shoes and clothing, too. Keep an entryway basket for outdoor shoes, and have kids change clothes immediately after outdoor play. This simple habit stops allergens from being traced throughout your home.

By staying one step ahead of allergy season, families can help kids feel healthier, more comfortable, and ready to enjoy all that spring has to offer.
